You’re disorganized, aren’t you? Admit it, the last time you tried to find a file on your computer, you got lost in the electronic stacks – and you made your boss/wife/self mad in the process. It really doesn’t have to be that way, you know. You can have a system of organization that not only makes sense, but also that allows you to file what you’re looking for in as little time as possible. All you need is file management software. And you can stop thinking for yourself – since that hasn’t gotten you anywhere.
Where Your Files Are
The trick with being organized at your computer is that different computer systems have different ideas about how to get organized. Though you might think that a file should be in one place, it generally ends up in another, causing you to have to spend hours hunting for what you need. What you need to do today is determine where you want all of the files you’re working on to end up. This will help you to better organize your life and your work, but also it will reduce the time you spend looking for things. Even if you don’t end up with a file management software system, you can have a better time with the files you need to corral.
You Already Have the Software
Whether you realize it or not, you already have the software that you need in order to manage your files. Each time you go to save a file, your computer is going to ask you where you want to store it – and that’s when you can make the best decision for the file. If you want the file on a flash drive, then say so. If you want the file on your desktop, say so. No matter what you might want, you can direct your computer to do it, helping you to stay organized and to keep things in the proper places where they can be easily retrieved.
Learn Your Computer
The best thing you can do today is to organize the files you already have. This will help you to have a fresh starting point and then you can begin to create a better system process. Once you have your files in the proper folders, then you can arrange the folders as needed. You will also want to look for ways to automate the process as much as possible. For many people, this will involve looking at the settings in your document processing program. Once you do that, you will be able to see what the computer is going to do automatically and you can change this. For example, if your computer is set to save everything to the desktop, then you can change the settings to have the computer ask you before it stores anything so that you can store it in the right place.
File management is going to help you get your life under control – but it probably won’t make up for your past mistakes. It’s not that good of a program.
