Don’t Forget the Updates

Security of a person’s system is extremely important these days. We continue to store increasingly sensitive information on our computers whether it is personal or business related. We can no longer assume that the information is safe simply because we have placed a password on it. Far too often identity theft continues to ruin people’s lives. It has reached the point where it is imperative that we take advantage of every security option available to ensure that what is on our computers stays on our computers.

One important security feature that needs to be kept up-to-date on our computers is the operating system updates.  Operating systems should be thought of as complex machines made up of hundreds of individual parts each with its own important function to perform. When working properly they keep our systems working harmoniously with software and online operations. But with so many small parts it is altogether possible that some of the parts are going to wear out or need replacing by superior parts. This inherent problem is a major weakness in a computer system’s defenses.

This particular vulnerability in an operating system’s security can be exploited by those who want access to your private information. Fortunately the manufacturers of operating systems are aware of this problem. They recognize the need for constant updates, and provide users with constant patches that repair and update these potential security hazards.

The easiest way to address this issue is to use the automatic update features that most systems come with. Failure to do so leaves your system at risk and your personal information exposed.

Safe and Secure Records

Over the past several years, the medical community has seen a move towards the creation and maintenance of electronic medical records. This new form of record keeping offers several benefits to both healthcare professionals and to patients. It is likely that this move will create a safer and more effective way to address the needs of patients everywhere.

One of the most exciting changes made possible by medical records that are electronic in nature is how easy they are to transport. Patient information, including medical history, test results, diagnosis and treatment will be centralized. This is beneficial to the patient because it removes the need to arrange to have medical records sent to new doctors in the event of a move or a visit to a specialist. Because all the records are stored electronically, patients will no long need to fill out complicated forms regarding their medical history. Each new doctor or specialist will simple access the patients’ electronic medical records and have access to all of the medical information regarding the patient.

Obviously the primary benefit of electronic medical records is safety. No longer will patients have to worry about collecting all of their medical records. Sent electronically, every record will be accessible. Doctors will have the entire history – all at the click of a button. Even better, the records are securely stored, so the information they contain are not only easy accessed – they are always protected.

While not all medical establishments have made this change, we are likely to see more and more medical offices use them in the future.

Keeping Your Files Safe

With millions of people logging on to what seems like an unlimited amount of websites, it’s no wonder that many of us are concerned with keeping our information secure.  Much of the information we keep in files is of a personal nature that we wish to share on a need to know basis. There are ways to make your computer more secure. Here are the basics on keeping your information safe.

Securing your files begin with securing your computer. By assuring that your computer’s anti-virus software is operating with the current version is an effective way to defend against malicious software from getting into your system.  An updated security system will be better able to detect any harmful viruses or hidden spyware that would otherwise latch themselves to your computer and go unnoticed. It’s also a good idea to keep your Firewall software current so it can effectively block out unauthorized private networks from accessing your files.

Another way to protect your files is through implementing file sysytem permission to tailor who can and cannot have access your files. Passwords and file encryption are another way to protect your information. The key to creating an effective password is by using one that is strong enough to stand against being easily discovered.  How about taking your favorite shape or symbol and combining with your favorite number and word? Try using the number 3 to replace the letter E or the number 9 to stand in for Q or P. Leetspeak is a way to replace letters with numbers. A good password is at least 8 characters long. containing a mix of numbers, letters and symbols.
